Place Value Shift
Place Value Shift helps students understand what happens to decimal digits when a number is divided by 10, 100, or 1,000. Students calculate each quotient, describe how many places the digits move, complete number patterns, and explain the place-value rule in words. Dividing by powers of ten is really a place-value change. When a number is divided by 10, every digit becomes worth one tenth as much, so each digit shifts one place to the right in the place-value chart. Dividing by 100 shifts the value two places, and dividing by 1,000 shifts it three places.
