Decimal Trio

Decimal Trio helps students see that the same decimal can be represented in several different ways. Students complete a chart by filling in the missing standard form, word form, or expanded form for each decimal. The worksheet strengthens decimal place value, number naming, expanded notation, standard notation, tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. It is especially useful for students in grades 4-6 who understand individual place values but need practice moving confidently between different ways of writing the same number.

Learning Goals

  • Read standard form: Students interpret decimals written with digits and a decimal point.
  • Write word form: Learners name decimal values using correct place-value language.
  • Write expanded form: Students break each decimal into the value of its separate digits.
  • Connect all three forms: Children recognize that each representation names the exact same quantity.

How This Helps

  • Builds flexible understanding: Students learn not to depend on just one way of seeing a decimal.
  • Supports parent guidance: Adults can ask, “Can you say the number, write it, and break it into place-value parts?”
  • Strengthens vocabulary: Learners repeatedly use terms such as tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.
  • Works across settings: Use it for classroom lessons, homework, tutoring, intervention, or homeschool instruction.
  • No-prep format: The worksheet is ready to print and use immediately.

A decimal such as 4.38 can look simple in standard form, but deeper understanding comes from knowing that it is also “four and thirty-eight hundredths” and 4 + 0.3 + 0.08. This worksheet helps students connect those forms so they understand the number rather than memorizing a single format. As learners complete the chart, they strengthen place-value fluency, number naming, expanded-form accuracy, standard-form understanding, and confidence. In classroom and homeschool settings, this practice supports later work with comparing, rounding, and operating with decimals.
