Decimal Stack

Decimal Stack helps students learn the most important setup skill in decimal addition: lining up the decimal points before adding. Students rewrite each horizontal problem vertically, place ones under ones, tenths under tenths, and hundredths under hundredths, and then solve the sum. The worksheet strengthens decimal addition, place value, vertical computation, regrouping, decimal-point alignment, and numerical accuracy. It is especially useful for students in grades 4-6 who understand whole-number addition but need practice seeing why decimals must be carefully lined up by place value.

Learning Goals

  • Align decimal points: Students place both addends so matching place values are in the same column.
  • Add by place value: Learners combine hundredths, tenths, ones, and larger places in an organized way.
  • Regroup when needed: Students carry values correctly across decimal place columns.
  • Write accurate sums: Children keep the decimal point in the correct position in the final answer.

How This Helps

  • Targets a common mistake: Many students get decimal sums wrong simply because the numbers were not lined up correctly.
  • Supports parent guidance: Adults can say, “Line up the dots first, then make sure every place-value column matches.”
  • Provides generous workspace: The large boxes give children room to rewrite and solve each problem neatly.
  • Works in many settings: Use it for classroom practice, homework, tutoring, intervention, or homeschool lessons.
  • No-prep format: The worksheet is ready to print and use immediately.

Decimal addition becomes much easier when students understand that the decimal point acts like a place-value anchor. For example, 5.4 can be thought of as 5.40, which makes it easier to line up with a number containing hundredths. This worksheet helps children slow down, organize their work, and avoid shifting digits into the wrong columns. As students practice, they strengthen place-value understanding, regrouping, decimal fluency, computation accuracy, and confidence. In classroom and homeschool settings, this skill prepares learners for decimal subtraction, money problems, measurement, and more advanced multi-step calculations.
