Decimal Stack

Decimal Stack helps students learn the most important setup skill in decimal subtraction: lining up the decimal points before subtracting. Students rewrite each horizontal problem vertically, make sure ones are under ones, tenths are under tenths, and hundredths are under hundredths, and then solve. The worksheet strengthens decimal subtraction, place value, vertical computation, regrouping, decimal-point alignment, and accuracy. It is especially useful for students in grades 4-6 who know whole-number subtraction but need practice applying those same ideas to decimal numbers.

Learning Goals

  • Align decimal points: Students place each number so matching place values are in the same column.
  • Subtract by place value: Learners work through hundredths, tenths, ones, and larger places in order.
  • Regroup correctly: Students borrow across decimal places when needed.
  • Write accurate differences: Children keep the decimal point in the correct position in the final answer.

How This Helps

  • Targets a very common error: Many students get decimal subtraction wrong because the digits are not lined up by place value.
  • Supports parent guidance: Adults can say, “Line up the decimal points first, then check that every column matches.”
  • Provides plenty of practice: Twelve problems help students build a steady routine.
  • Works in many settings: Use it for classroom practice, homework, tutoring, intervention, or homeschool lessons.
  • No-prep format: The worksheet is ready to print and use immediately.

Decimal subtraction becomes much easier when students understand that the decimal point acts like a place-value anchor. A number such as 7.2 can be thought of as 7.20 when it is being subtracted from a number written to the hundredths place. That simple idea helps prevent digits from slipping into the wrong columns. As learners complete the page, they strengthen place-value understanding, regrouping, subtraction fluency, decimal alignment, and confidence. In classroom and homeschool settings, this skill prepares students for money problems, measurement, multi-step word problems, and more advanced decimal operations.
