Deciding Digits

Deciding Digits helps students understand what actually controls a rounding decision. Instead of simply giving a rounded answer, students identify the place they are rounding to, write the digit in that place, find the digit immediately to its right, and then use that “deciding digit” to determine whether the number stays the same or rounds up. The worksheet strengthens decimal rounding, place value, tenths, hundredths, deciding-digit reasoning, and number sense. It is especially useful for students in grades 4-6 who know the basic “5 or more, raise the score” rule but need to understand which digit they should actually be looking at.

Rounding is much easier when students understand that two digits have different jobs. The digit in the rounding place is the one that may change, while the digit immediately to its right makes the decision. For example, when rounding 8.472 to the nearest tenth, the 4 is the digit being rounded and the 7 is the deciding digit. Because 7 is at least 5, the 4 becomes 5, giving 8.5. This worksheet makes that thinking visible. As learners work, they strengthen place-value fluency, rounding accuracy, mathematical vocabulary, attention to detail, and confidence.
