Reason It Out

Reason It Out asks students to solve unlike-denominator subtraction problems and explain the thinking behind their work. After calculating each difference, students write one or two sentences describing how they found the common denominator and why the fractions had to be renamed before subtraction. This activity develops fraction subtraction, equivalent fractions, mathematical vocabulary, written explanation, denominator reasoning, simplification, and conceptual understanding.
