Word Houses
This one is where kids really start to organize what they know. Instead of just matching, your child is now putting words into the correct “house” based on how they sound-like sorting cat, hat, flat into one group and dog, log into another.
This is a big step up because now they have to think:
“Where does this word belong?”
That’s deeper learning than just picking an answer.
What Your Child Is Practicing
- Grouping by Sound – sorting words into families like -at, -an, -og
- Pattern Recognition – noticing repeated endings across different words
- Comparing Words – checking before placing, not just guessing
- Reading Confidence – builds familiarity with common patterns
Why This One Matters
- Helps words “stick” because kids see patterns grouped together
- Makes reading faster (they recognize chunks instead of sounding out everything)
- Supports spelling without needing to memorize every word
- Builds independence-kids start figuring things out on their own
Parent Tip
If your child gets stuck, don’t jump in with the answer. Just ask:
“Say the word… what does it sound like at the end?”
That one question usually gets them back on track.
This worksheet is where things really start to click. Kids go from “I think I know” to “Ohhh, I see how these go together.”
