Decimal To Percent

This worksheet gives students direct practice turning decimals into percents, helping them see that the two forms are simply different ways of describing the same value. Students work with decimals such as 0.4, 0.08, 0.63, 1.2, 1.05, 2.3, 0.375, and 0.005, then write the equivalent percentage for each one. The activity strengthens decimal place value, percent notation, multiplication by 100, number sense, equivalent values, and conversion skills while also introducing students to percentages greater than 100% and very small percentages below 1%. It is especially useful for grades 5-6 students who are learning the basic decimal-percent relationship and need practice across a wide range of values.

Learning Goals

  • Convert Decimals to Percents: Students learn that multiplying a decimal by 100, or moving the decimal point two places to the right, gives the equivalent percent.
  • Work Beyond Simple Tenths: Learners practice with tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and decimals greater than 1.
  • Recognize Percents Over 100: Values such as 1.2 and 2.3 help students understand that a percent can describe more than one whole.
  • Understand Very Small Percents: Decimals such as 0.005 show students that percentages can also be less than 1%.

Classroom & Home Use

  • Easy for Parents to Explain: A helpful shortcut is, “Move the decimal two places to the right, then add the percent sign.”
  • Builds Place-Value Confidence: Students must understand how tenths, hundredths, and thousandths change when the value is expressed out of 100.
  • Good Skill Progression: The worksheet begins with familiar values before moving into more challenging decimals.
  • Useful for Quick Practice: It works well for homework, math centers, independent review, intervention, or homeschool lessons.
  • Prepares for Real-World Percent Math: This skill supports later work with discounts, test scores, probability, interest, and data.

The biggest benefit of this worksheet is that it helps students stop seeing decimals and percents as unrelated topics. Decimal place value, percentages, equivalent values, multiplication by 100, magnitude, and number sense all work together as students translate one form into another. For parents, a value like 0.4 becoming 40% is a useful starting point because it shows that four tenths is the same as forty out of one hundred. Once that idea is clear, values such as 0.08, 1.05, or 0.375 become much easier to understand. In classroom and homeschool settings, this worksheet builds the conversion fluency students need before moving into more advanced percentage problems.
