Operation Order

This worksheet takes integer skills up another level by asking students to solve expressions that contain more than one operation. Instead of handling a single addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division problem, students must follow the correct order of operations while also applying positive and negative sign rules. Expressions include combinations such as addition with multiplication, division followed by addition, and grouped values inside parentheses. That makes the worksheet especially valuable for grades 6-7 students who understand individual integer operations but need practice putting them together inside multi-step expressions.

For a parent, the most important thing to remember is that students should not simply work from left to right from the beginning. They first handle anything inside parentheses, then complete multiplication and division, and finally complete addition and subtraction. Multiplication and division are handled from left to right when they appear at the same level, and the same is true for addition and subtraction. The child also still has to use the correct integer sign rules at every step.

Learning Goals

  • Follow the Order of Operations: Students evaluate expressions in the correct sequence.
  • Use Integer Rules Inside Multi-Step Problems: Learners apply positive and negative sign rules throughout the calculation.
  • Work Carefully with Parentheses: Students understand that grouped expressions are handled before outside operations.
  • Combine Operations Correctly: Learners move between multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction without mixing rules.
  • Build Multi-Step Problem-Solving Skills: Students learn to organize work instead of trying to solve everything mentally at once.

Parent-Friendly Teaching Tips

  • Start with Parentheses: Anything inside grouping symbols comes first.
  • Then Do Multiplication and Division: Work from left to right when both appear.
  • Finish with Addition and Subtraction: Again, work from left to right.
  • Write Intermediate Answers: Encourage the child to rewrite the expression after each step instead of trying to hold everything in memory.
  • Recheck Signs at Every Stage: A single sign mistake early in the problem can throw off the entire answer.

Why This Worksheet Is Important

  • Connects Integer Math to Order of Operations: Students learn that two major math topics have to work together.
  • Prepares for Algebra: Multi-step expressions are a major part of middle-school algebra.
  • Builds Organization: Students learn to show steps instead of jumping directly to an answer.
  • Exposes Rule Confusion: If a child multiplies after adding, or changes a sign incorrectly, the error becomes easy to identify.
  • Strengthens Mathematical Discipline: Students learn that correct order matters just as much as correct arithmetic.

Classroom & Home Use

  • Excellent for Unit Review: It combines integer operations with order-of-operations skills.
  • Good for Guided Practice: Teachers or parents can work through one expression slowly and then let students continue independently.
  • Useful for Homework: The problems are challenging enough to reinforce careful work.
  • Strong for Intervention: Students who rush can benefit from being required to show each stage.
  • Helpful for Algebra Readiness: The structure closely resembles the expressions students will see later with variables.

The real value of this worksheet is that students have to coordinate two different kinds of rules at the same time: the order in which operations happen and the sign rules that belong to integer arithmetic. Parentheses, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, positive numbers, negative numbers, and multi-step reasoning all work together. For parents, the best reminder is: “Do the right operation at the right time, and check the sign every time.” In classroom and homeschool settings, this worksheet is an important step toward confident algebraic thinking.
