Digit Detectives

Digit Detectives helps students compare decimal numbers by looking carefully at place value from left to right. Students compare each pair, circle the first place where the digits are different, write the correct comparison symbol, and explain which digit makes one decimal greater than the other. The worksheet strengthens decimal comparison, ones, tenths, hundredths, thousandths, place-value reasoning, comparison symbols, and mathematical explanation. It is especially useful for students in grades 4-6 who need more than a memorized rule and benefit from understanding exactly why one decimal is larger or smaller.

Learning Goals

  • Compare from left to right: Students begin with the greatest place value and move right until the digits differ.
  • Identify the deciding digit: Learners circle the first place where the numbers are no longer equal.
  • Use comparison symbols: Students correctly write greater than, less than, or equal to.
  • Explain the reasoning: Children connect the comparison to the specific place value that determines the result.

How This Helps

  • Builds strong place-value understanding: Students learn why 4.582 is greater than 4.572 instead of simply guessing from the digits.
  • Supports parent guidance: Adults can ask, “Which place is the first one where the numbers stop matching?”
  • Encourages math language: Learners name ones, tenths, hundredths, and thousandths as part of their explanation.
  • Works across settings: Use it for classroom lessons, homework, tutoring, intervention, or homeschool instruction.
  • No-prep format: The page is ready to print and use immediately.

Comparing decimals becomes much easier when students stop looking at the whole number as one long string of digits. The key is to compare the ones first, then the tenths, then the hundredths, and continue until a difference appears. That first different digit decides which number is greater because all larger place values were already equal. As learners complete the page, they strengthen decimal place value, comparison fluency, logical reasoning, symbol accuracy, mathematical vocabulary, and confidence. In classroom and homeschool settings, this practice prepares students for ordering decimals, rounding, measurement comparisons, and later work with more complex rational numbers.
