Telephone QAR

This structured reading comprehension worksheet supports students in Grades 4, 5, and 6 as they develop stronger metacognitive awareness and strategic reading skills using the QAR (Question-Answer Relationship) framework. After reading an informational passage about the invention of the telephone, students identify the QAR type for each question and then explain their thinking through a brief “think-aloud,” reinforcing how and why different comprehension strategies are used.

Learning Goals

  • QAR Classification (Grades 4-6): Identify Right There, Think and Search, Author and Me, and On My Own questions accurately.
  • Metacognitive Reading Skills: Reflect on how answers are located and why specific strategies are needed.
  • Literal & Interpretive Thinking: Distinguish between questions answered directly from the text and those requiring inference or personal insight.
  • Evidence-Based Explanation: Clearly explain reasoning behind each QAR classification.

Instructional Benefits

  • Teacher-Created Resource: Designed by educators to align with upper elementary ELA comprehension standards.
  • Think-Aloud Practice: Encourages students to articulate their thought process, not just the final answer.
  • Builds Strategic Readers: Helps learners slow down and choose appropriate approaches to different question types.
  • Flexible Classroom Use: Ideal for guided reading, comprehension strategy lessons, literacy centers, homework, or assessment.

This printable worksheet helps students become more thoughtful and independent readers by focusing on how comprehension happens. By pairing QAR classification with reflective explanations, learners strengthen critical thinking, self-awareness, and reading accuracy. Whether used in a classroom or homeschool setting, this resource provides meaningful practice with metacognition, informational text comprehension, and purposeful reading strategies.
