Backing Up Claims
In this worksheet, students read a passage on the benefits of recycling and identify four claims the author makes. They then locate supporting evidence for each claim, such as statistics, facts, or examples. This activity strengthens students’ ability to distinguish between claims and evidence-an essential skill for reading informational argument texts. They learn how writers use factual support to strengthen their points. Students also develop critical thinking by analyzing whether the evidence is strong or sufficient. The worksheet encourages close reading, attention to detail, and evaluation of environmental solutions. It supports literacy development across science and social studies contexts.
