Comparing Perspectives
In this worksheet, students read two adapted literary excerpts-one from Ralph Waldo Emerson and one from Walt Whitman-and compare how each author presents ideas about individuality and self-reliance. Students answer four analytical questions that require them to examine tone, word choice, imagery, and thematic perspective. The activity encourages them to identify similarities and differences in how both writers express personal identity and connection to the self. By using direct evidence from each text, students practice comparative analysis and develop a deeper understanding of how authors convey philosophical ideas through style and language.
