Meaning Mark-Up

In this worksheet, students read a descriptive passage multiple times and annotate it using specific mark-up symbols. They circle repeated words or phrases, underline striking or powerful language, and place a star next to unusual or surprising details. After annotating, they answer four comprehension questions that require them to use their markings as evidence. The activity teaches students to slow down, observe craft choices, and recognize meaningful repetition, imagery, and detail. By focusing on close reading strategies, students develop deeper literary insight and an understanding of how authors create mood and suggestion.
