Writing Deep Questions

This worksheet helps students in Grades 5 and 6 strengthen reading comprehension, critical thinking, and questioning skills by analyzing a narrative about Amina, a young girl who designs an irrigation system to help her village. After reading the passage, learners write six original questions-literal, inferential, and evaluative-and label each type, encouraging them to think carefully about how questions reflect different levels of understanding and interpretation.

Learning Goals

  • Writing Multiple Types of Questions (Grades 5-6)
Students practice creating literal, inferential, and evaluative questions tied directly to a text.
  • Analyzing Character & Problem-Solving
Learners explore Amina’s motivations, challenges, and solutions through purposeful questioning.
  • Higher-Order Thinking Development
Students move beyond recall to interpretation, judgment, and reflection.
  • Understanding Question Purpose
The activity reinforces how different question types serve different reading goals.

Instructional Benefits

  • Teacher-Created Resource
Designed by educators to align with upper elementary ELA comprehension and thinking standards.
  • Structured Question-Writing Practice
Clear expectations help students confidently generate and categorize questions.
  • Flexible Classroom Use
Ideal for reading lessons, discussion prep, assessment, homework, or enrichment.
  • Supports Metacognition
Labeling question types helps students reflect on how they think about texts.

This printable worksheet helps students become more thoughtful and independent readers by teaching them how to ask meaningful questions at different cognitive levels. By writing and labeling literal, inferential, and evaluative questions, learners strengthen comprehension, analytical reasoning, and engagement with narrative text. It’s a meaningful, no-prep resource that works well in both classroom instruction and homeschool learning.
