Claim or Not

Students read individual statements and determine whether each one is a claim or a non-claim (a fact, preference, or simple statement). The worksheet requires students to label each sentence, encouraging them to differentiate between opinions that assert an argument and statements that do not. This helps students understand what qualifies as an argumentative claim, which is essential for persuasive writing. The activity also promotes critical thinking, as students must justify why a sentence does or does not function as a claim. An optional extension asks students to write both a claim and a non-claim to demonstrate mastery.
