Article Excerpts

Students read excerpts taken directly from the Articles of Confederation and highlight or underline clues showing why cooperation between states was difficult. They then answer two questions analyzing these challenges and explaining the importance of interstate cooperation. The activity strengthens document-reading skills and helps learners understand the structural weaknesses built into the Articles. Students use evidence from primary-source text to support their explanations, building strong social studies literacy.
