Pencil-to-Apple Pathway Answer Key

This is a really nice entry point into pencil control mazes because it keeps the visual field clean while still asking for intentional movement. Students are guiding their pencil from the starting point to the apple, and while there are multiple possible paths, the real focus is on how they manage that movement. What I like here is that it allows for flexibility, but still reveals a lot about control and pacing. I’d use this with Pre-K through Kindergarten as an introduction to maze work.

Targeted Skills

  • Basic Path Navigation – Students follow a route from start to finish.
  • Pencil Control – Builds steady, guided movement.
  • Visual Tracking – Encourages scanning and staying oriented.
  • Decision-Making – Students choose and commit to a path.

Instructional Support

  • Great Starting Point – Low pressure but still skill-building.
  • Flexible Approach – Multiple paths allow for exploration.
  • Strong Observation Tool – You can see how students approach choice.
  • Builds Early Confidence – Students feel successful quickly.

This is one of those pages where you’re really watching how students approach the maze. Do they pause and look first, or jump right in? That initial approach matters. It’s where you begin to build the habit of thinking before moving, which becomes really important as tasks get more complex.
