Flip the Focus

Students read a paragraph that highlights similarities between the city and the countryside. Their task is to rewrite it so that the focus shifts entirely to contrasts instead. They must use contrast signal words such as “however,” “while,” and “on the other hand” to clearly show opposing ideas. This encourages students to think critically about how wording, structure, and emphasis change meaning in writing. The activity strengthens compare-and-contrast skills, paragraph rewriting, and textual analysis. The challenge invites learners to add a final sentence sharing which place they would prefer to live in, promoting reflective writing and opinion expression.
