Same Word, New Shades

In this worksheet, students explore how a single word can have one main denotation but multiple connotations depending on context. They complete a chart by recording the dictionary definition for each word and listing at least two possible connotations-positive, negative, or neutral. This activity encourages learners to analyze the emotional “shades” of meaning that words can take on, strengthening their understanding of nuanced vocabulary use. A reflection task asks students to write two short sentences using one word in different connotative ways, reinforcing the practical application of connotation in writing. Through this work, students gain a deeper appreciation of how language choices influence tone and interpretation.
