Trait Sorting
In this worksheet, students read a list of character traits and sort them into two categories: inside traits and outside traits. Learners must carefully distinguish between personality-based traits and physical characteristics, reinforcing their understanding of how authors develop characters. After sorting, students create a new character by selecting traits from each category and writing a descriptive paragraph. This activity encourages students to think deeply about how traits shape a character’s identity. It also strengthens descriptive writing skills by asking students to combine physical and internal qualities into a coherent character sketch. Students practice critical thinking as they justify which traits belong in each category and apply them meaningfully in writing.
