Heroism Then and Now

This comparative analysis worksheet is designed for Grades 7-10 and helps students examine how ideas of heroism have evolved from ancient epic literature to the modern world. Using a structured graphic organizer, students compare Beowulf’s heroic traits-such as bravery, sacrifice, loyalty, strength, and moral courage-with those of modern heroes, including real-life figures (firefighters, soldiers, doctors) or fictional superheroes. Students analyze specific actions and motivations, not just labels, to see how heroism is defined in different cultural contexts.

After completing the organizer, students write a short analytical essay explaining key similarities and differences between ancient and modern views of heroism. An optional extension challenge asks students to argue whether Beowulf would still be admired as a hero today, encouraging personal reflection and evidence-based reasoning.
