Crafting Kennings
This creative and analytical worksheet is designed for Grades 7-10 and introduces students to kennings, a signature poetic device of Old English literature and a defining feature of Beowulf. Students first analyze provided lines by underlining each kenning and translating its meaning into modern English, helping them decode figurative language rooted in Anglo-Saxon culture.
In the second half of the activity, students apply their understanding by creating three original kennings inspired by everyday objects, people, or elements of nature. This balance of analysis and creation strengthens comprehension while encouraging imaginative expression.
