Proverb Analogies

In this worksheet, students analyze pairs of proverbs and related concepts to complete each proverb analogy. They first read a familiar saying such as “A stitch in time saves nine” and identify the underlying idea, like prevention. Then they match or generate a word or phrase that expresses a similar idea for a second proverb in the pair. This requires students to interpret figurative language and think beyond literal meanings to the lesson or moral being taught. As they compare and contrast different proverbs, learners deepen their understanding of themes such as patience, effort, cooperation, and caution. The task promotes higher-order thinking by asking students to connect abstract ideas across multiple sayings.
