Changing the Voice
In this worksheet, students explore how voice, tone, and word choice change the mood of a passage. They read three short versions of the same scene-written as a pirate, vampire, and cowboy-and annotate each text as directed. Students circle unusual voice-specific words, underline the opening sentence to study tone, mark phrases containing imagery, and add a final sentence in the same style. This activity strengthens students’ ability to identify stylistic markers, analyze authorial voice, and recognize how vocabulary and tone shape the atmosphere of writing. It also encourages creativity and reinforces close reading of descriptive language.
