Survive or Struggle

This cause-and-effect worksheet challenges students to link environmental and human factors to their consequences during Jamestown’s settlement. Learners analyze issues such as swampy land, conflicts with Native Americans, and lack of farming skills, then determine their effects on colonists’ success or hardship. The exercise encourages students to think critically about survival conditions and resource management in early colonies. The “Extra Thinking” section deepens analysis by asking students to evaluate which cause most influenced Jamestown’s survival. Through this process, students practice analytical reasoning and historical interpretation.
