Battles Within and Beyond

Students classify ten conflicts from Across Five Aprils into three categories: man vs. man, man vs. self, and man vs. society. Each scenario illustrates different types of struggle faced by Jethro and his community during the Civil War. This task deepens comprehension by helping students recognize internal and external sources of tension within a literary text. Learners apply critical thinking as they interpret the nature of each conflict and its impact on plot and character development. By distinguishing between personal, social, and moral conflicts, students develop analytical reading skills essential for literary study.
