Number Sentence Builder

This one continues that same idea but adds a little more independence. Your child is still using the boxes to solve the problem, but now they’re being asked to manage more of the thinking on their own. It’s a really nice step forward, especially if they’re starting to feel more confident with simple addition.

What’s important here is that they’re learning to move between the equation and the model. That back-and-forth-seeing the numbers, then building them-is what helps everything click. I’d encourage your child to go slowly here and really use the boxes, even if they think they know the answer.

Key Learning Areas

  • Connecting Equations to Models – Understanding what the numbers mean.
  • Independent Problem Solving – Taking more ownership of the process.
  • Accuracy in Counting – Making sure each box represents one item.
  • Confidence Building – Reinforcing success through structure.

How It Supports Learning

  • Builds Strong Math Habits – Encourages showing work, not rushing.
  • Supports Different Learning Styles – Especially helpful for visual learners.
  • Creates a Thinking Routine – Read → Build → Count → Answer.
  • Prepares for More Complex Math – Sets the stage for larger numbers.

This is a great one to observe quietly. You’ll notice whether your child still relies heavily on filling every box, or if they start to mentally picture it instead. Both are okay-but that gradual shift from doing to imagining is exactly what we’re working toward. It means the understanding is starting to move from their hands into their thinking.
