A Noun Challenge Passage

In this activity, students read a short passage titled “The Unexpected Hero” and identify every noun they find. For each underlined noun, they must determine whether it is concrete or abstract, labeling it with (C) or (A). The story provides rich context for distinguishing between things that can be seen, touched, or heard and those that represent emotions or ideas. Through this applied reading exercise, students reinforce grammar identification skills while building comprehension of how abstract and concrete nouns interact in meaningful storytelling. The passage also subtly promotes character education by illustrating courage and kindness through grammar practice.
