Power Analysis
In this worksheet, students read two primary source excerpts-one from the Articles of Confederation and one from a letter written by George Washington to James Madison. They answer analytical questions that require using evidence from both documents to explain concerns about national power, money collection, unity, and the limitations of the early government. Students examine which level of government held authority, why the national government struggled financially, and how leaders recognized the weaknesses of the Articles. This activity deepens primary-source literacy and strengthens students’ understanding of why the Constitutional Convention was necessary. Learners practice evidence-based reasoning and historical interpretation.
